Alexander McQueen passed away on February 10 at the age of 40 in his townhouse in London.
Paramedics found him on the floor and announced him dead.
"At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family," the family statement continued.
"Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this."
McQueen broke into the fashion scene during college at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. A stylist by the name of Isabella Blow requested every look he created.
Starting out by creating dresses for his sisters, Mqueen began to get serious about being a designer.
Everything of his that went down the runway always shocked people while his famed "Highland Rape" collection with trousers that were more commonly known as "bumsters," became his signature look A decade later in 2006, he came back with this look.
Later in his career he left a job as couturier for Givenchy in 2001 and found himself a home in the Gucci family. Mqueen helped build many fashion houses with many designers and has truely made a name for himself. It took much patience for people to wait for his new collections every year during fashion week, especially the last women's ready-to-wear show he would do.
In a recent conversation he talked about how excited he was to be moving into his new home, walking his dogs in Hyde Park, how determined he was to do lots of cooking, and happy to get his wine cellar going.
In person, McQueen was a soft spoken, nice man who had a sensitivityabout him.
